My friend Norm at HOOPLES celebrated his 40th birthday on Saturday night with a packed house at the bar! I enjoyed my first Dortmunder ever at HOOPPLES and Norm and I have been friends ever since. Two years ago, I celebrated my 40th at HOOPPLES ....

....the difference between the two parties.....??? I didn't require people to wear pink.... : )

HOOPPLES is a great bar with an awesome view of the city. The people who go there and the people who run the place are authentic. If you have never been, I highly suggest you check it out.

THE TALE OF 2 LEMONADE STANDS....

I'm a big fan of lemonade stands. In fact, I have NEVER (and I do mean NEVER) passed a lemonade stand without stopping to make a purchase. This is a tale of two lemonade stands passed along to me from a good friend...

The first stand is run by two kids. They use Countrytime lemonade, paper cups and a bridge table. It's a decent lemonade stand, one in the long tradition of standard lemonade stands. It costs a dollar to buy a cup, which is a pretty good price, considering you get both the lemonade and the satisfaction of knowing you supported two kids.
The other stand is different. The lemonade is free, but there's a big tip jar. When you pull up, the owner of the stand beams as only a proud eleven year old girl can beam. She takes her time and reaches into a pail filled with ice and lemons. She pulls out a lemon. Slices it. Then she squeezes it with a clever little hand juicer.
The whole time that's she's squeezing, she's also talking to you, sharing her insights (and yes, her joy) about the power of lemonade to change your day. It's a beautiful day and she's in no real hurry. Lemonade doesn't hurry, she says. It gets made the right way or not at all. Then she urges you to take a bit less sugar, because it tastes better that way.
While you're talking, a dozen people who might have become customers drive on by because it appears to take too long. You don't mind, though, because you're engaged, almost entranced. A few people pull over and wait in line behind you.
Finally, once she's done, you put $5 in the jar, because your free lemonade was worth at least twice that. Well, maybe the lemonade itself was worth $3, but you'd happily pay again for the transaction. It touched you. In fact, it changed you.

I have been feeding my mind with positive conversations with good friends and reading inspirational articles in an effort to jump-start 2010 and beyond...a good friend forwarded this blog to me and I found it to be a good thought-provoking read... The article inspired me to come up with my own list of things I wish someone told me ten years ago....

A FEW GOOD HEALTH TIPS TO GET ON TRACK..

Here are a few things to remember if you are trying to get your health on track. A friend sent these from Joy Bauer's book "YOUR INNER SKINNY".....

DON'TS.....

1. DON'T add sugar, other natural sweeteners (including honey, agave, and stevia), or artificial sweeteners to anything. Sugar, honey, and other calorie-containing sweeteners add 60 calories per tablespoon to your day's intake, so you'll save considerable calories by cutting out the sugar you typically add to your coffee, tea, cereal, beverages, yogurts, etc. Artificially sweetened foods may not have the calories of sugar-sweetened foods, but they keep sweetness on our taste buds and our minds. I recommend cutting out all added sugars (real and artificial) for at least a week to help you break free of your compulsion to eat sweet foods. Then, minimize your intake going forward.

2. DON'T add salt to anything. Eating foods with a lot of added salt causes you to retain water, which drives up the number on the scale and makes you feel uncomfortable. Part of my week-long cleanse is getting rid of salty foods that promote bloating.

3. DON'T eat starches with dinner (including bread, rice, pasta, peas, beans, corn and potatoes). People tend to overeat starches for a number of reasons: these foods have great mouth feel, it's hard to estimate portions, they're some of America's favorite comfort foods, and they're calorie-dense. People are especially conditioned to overeat these foods at dinner. By making them totally off-limits, you don't have to cut yourself off mid-meal (after you've already primed your tastebuds).

4. DON'T drink alcohol. Alcohol adds a lot of empty calories to your diet, plus it lowers your inhibitions so you're more likely to veer off plan and make unhealthy food choices. By cutting out the alcohol, you'll give your liver a well needed break and you'll have firmer resolve to stick with the rest of the diet's "do's and don'ts."

DO'S....

1. DO eat on a schedule and enjoy three meals and one snack each day.

2. DO drink lots of water throughout the day, including two 8-ounce glasses before lunch and two 8-ounce glasses before dinner. (These before-meal waters should be consumed up to 30 minutes before eating.) Enjoy as much additional water as you want during meals and throughout the day.

3. DO enjoy "water alternatives" in unlimited quantities at any point during the day. These include: coffee or tea with 1% or skim milk only, seltzer (plain and naturally flavored), sparkling water, club soda, or water with lemon/lime/orange wedges.

4. DO begin dinner with a healthy appetizer: a large tossed salad (with 2-3 tablespoons reduced-calorie dressing); a bowl of broth-based non-starchy veggie* soup; or any plain vegetable such as a sliced cucumber, red pepper sticks or green beans.

5. DO indulge in non-starchy vegetables* in unlimited quantities at any time throughout the day, particularly when you get hungry between designated meal and snack times.

6. DO engage in 30 to 60 minutes of aerobic exercise everyday (walking is fine).
*Non-starchy vegetables include: asparagus, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, green leafy vegetables, eggplant, green beans, mushrooms, okra, onion, peppers, radishes, snow peas, tomato, and zucchini

I went back home to the Seattle area over the weekend and had a total blast!

I went to my first SEAHAWKS game at the new stadium and enjoyed a Seattle win over San Francisco. The Seahawks kicked a game winning field goal as time ran out for a 17-14 win...

I met up with ROB SIMS from The Seahawks for all of his 26th birthday festivities. We had an awesome meal on the Seattle waterfront at The CRAB POT. What a great place! They just throw down a bunch of seafood, hand you tools and you go for it!!

I spent the entire weekend hangin' out with my friends Dave and Woody gettin' caught up and enjoying all that Seattle has to offer...

A personal message from Chad Taylor:

Dead Friend of Live,

Let me start by thanking you for your many years of devoted loyalty to our music. Bands are lucky if they have one hit and fade away but in the case of Live, you kept us relevant for more than 20 years. Today I am writing you as a fan of the band with sad news. As many of you know, Live was having a hard time keeping things together. After many years of friendship, love and laughter it became clear that things had run their course.
I was in denial. Our working relationship with Ed had grown cold and we were only on limited speaking terms for the last several months. We agreed for the sake of the bands future to take a break and announced the hiatus. During that time period we discovered a contract executed in 2005 that engaged the bands company into a legal obligation that did not have majority consent from the band. Ed’s signature was the only one required.We were fast to try and open communication with Ed or his legal team but got no reply.
Our hiatus had fast turned into a break up. Chad, Patrick and I have no plans to replace Ed at this point in time, however, he will no longer be a member of our band. We are excited by the opportunities ahead of us and will look to enjoin forces with vocalists and instrumentalists that will hold high the ideals set forth by the band and its fans.
Yes, there may be future Live recording and tours but we are all very realistic that it will never be the same without Ed. That doesn’t mean that it can’t be great. Like you, we are greatly saddened by the discoveries we made but as many of you know, life has a way of sorting things out. Ed will always be tied to Live and we will never make attempts to shadow his considerable lyrical and melodic contributions to our music.
Stay tuned to FOL for more details on our future plans. I would also ask that we all take the time to remember the positive energy Ed, Chad, Patrick and I spent so many years pushing forward. I’m trying hard myself to not be judgmental and let life flow freely around me.

RANDOM WEEKEND THOUGHTS...

What an exciting day today! I'm honored to be hosting two very special events on the same day. Early this afternoon, I'll be in Alliance, Ohio introducing the Governor at an event honoring troops who are being deployed across the globe. I have so much respect for the men and women of the military and I'm blessed to be apart of such a special day.
Early this evening, I'll be in downtown Cleveland co-hosting WinterFest '09. Rebecca Wilde and I have been asked to MC this spectacular event for the first time and we are thrilled to do so. We'll be introducing Mayor Frank Jackson and helping to light the tree in the heart of the city. I've attended this event several times and I'm excited to be hosting it for the first time ever!

Birthday week has officially begun. I'll turn 42 this upcoming Thursday, December 3. The week between Thanksgiving and my birthday is always such an emotional time for me personally. I tend to get quiet and reflective. For as long as I can remember, I've always naturally taken this time to look back on the year and set personal goals for the year ahead. This year, my head is very full.

Some of you have dropped me notes asking how my friend and daughter's GodMother Denise is doing. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer the same week that same disease took her mother's life. She was unable to attend her own mother's funeral because of her surgery. She is back home now and the doctors say they got all of it. The journey has begun. Chemo starts soon. I travelled to Michigan to see her and her family this past weekend. It was one of the most powerful times of my life. It put so much into perspective. She is an amazing lady and deserves our prayers.

I was invited to attend a private performance and dinner with SARAH DARLING at The Foundation Room of House of Blues this past week. She is a singer/songwriter out of Iowa/Nashville. She has a great voice and gave a wonderful peformance. You will be hearing more from her in the future.

The Conseco Fieldhouse is a beautiful arena. Some say it's the best arena in The NBA!

I had a chance to sit down and talk with MILEY CYRUS after her soundcheck Sunday afternoon at The "Q". For 16-years-old, she was well spoken and a very good interview. She was authentic and seemed genuine with her answers. I was surprised that we were not given any rules on what we could and couldn't ask. It was anything goes and she seemed very comfortable. Watching her talk with her crew, fans and back-up singers/dancers, she was like any other teenage girl. She was pleasant and confident.

The chefs on The Food Network really are rock stars! Both Guy Fieri and Cleveland's Michael Symon drew HUGE crwods at The IX Center on Saturday. The Wilde and Fee Show was on stage for ALL of Guy Fieri's show. What a great guy and an awesome experience!

"The Men Who Stare At Goats" could have been a lot better movie...but it really didn't need to be. It is entertaining enough. George Clooney is just that cool. Every time I see one of his movies, it feels like he is wingin' it and mocking the movie making process. It's like he drops into making a movie and rolls with it. The movie opened this past week to mixed reviews. Some say it starts strong but comedically lags. Considering it's only an hour and a half, it's not long enough to "lag". I laughed. I was entertained. I went home. I still wanna be George Clooney.

Golf at BOULDER CREEK was spectacular yesterday. It was a gorgeous day on an amazing golf course. EVERY hole was a post-card. The Fall colors were beautiful! It was one of the most enjoyable rounds of golf I have ever played....

It's Sunday morning and I'm enjoying a cup of coffee and lookin' back on the week that was....
I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the LeBron James movie "MORE THAN A GAME". When I first heard of the movie, I thought it was waaaaay too early for him to have a movie. I didn't realize that the sole focus was on his high school team and all they had gone through. The movie is awesome and great for all ages. I highly recommend seeing it. If you are a CAVS fan or sports fan in general, it's a great story. I don't want to give away the movie, but, LeBron ends up doing pretty good for himself..... : )

For quite some time, I have wanted to go check out the spectacular view from the 55th floor of The Key Tower. I finally had my chance this week while attending a networking gathering earlier this week...

My daughter Gabby is still sidelined from soccer with a foot injury. We hung out watching the other kids play on Saturday morning at Smith Park. The X-ray below is showing a growth-plate injury...uh, whatever that means....I miss watching her play....

It's BROWNS/STEELERS week. My friend NORM hung up this sign outside my favorite bar HOOPPLES. Yes, the Steelers have won 11-straight...and yes, it's been a brutal season so far for the BROWNS...but somehow, I have this vibe that the BROWNS are gonna win 20-17....

After multiple tries, I was finally able to snap a picture of Gabby and her dog Lucy.

I snapped this pic on my iphone. Gabby had just gotten off the school bus and Lucy started jumping up and down in excitement. I had no idea that Gabby had entered the pic until later. The picture makes me smile.

A foot injury has sidelined Gabs from soccer for the rest of the season...that gives her more time to focus on her new passion; the trumpet...

I attended this week's CAVS pre-season game at The Q this week. I took tons of pix including this one of SHAQ and LeBRON. You can totally feel something special already. It's still hard to believe we have two of the greats to ever play the game right here in Cleveland!! Now, it's SHAQ vs "THE CURSE" lol

My friend ROB SIMS of The Seattle Seahawks (Nordonia HS & OSU) got banged up this past week at Indy. A high ankle sprain sidelined him this week at home against Jacksonville. He's a warrior...says he "recovers pretty quick from these things). Great to see the Seahawks get back Matt Hasselbeck back and roll big to a 41-0 win!

KATE VOEGLE (One Tree Hill) returned home to Cleveland this week for a show at The House of Blues and an appearance on our radio show. I first met "KATIE" when she was 15 when we all thought she had potential....that potential has blossomed into an awesome CD, a role on "ONE TREE HILL" and an appearance on The Tonight Show. It was great to see her perform again and I appreciated her on-stage shoutouts to Q104.

Random Notes:

The BROWNS didn't win this week...they didn't lose. Bills handed the game to us. Our QB completed two passes...that's not a "WIN".

This past week on the show, we learned that ALL women hide their underwear when they visit the gyno....who knew???

Nine Things Parents Don't Get About Kids and Sports

During car rides to games or practice, kids don't want you to tell them how to do this or that.
("I am not stupid," or "I know how to play the sport I play," are typical responses.)

Kids can get psyched for a game without parental help.

It's your duty as a parent to sit quietly and watch your kids do wonderful things.
(Kids get bummed out when you miss games or yak it up too much with friends in the stands.)

If you don't know what you're talking about, kids don't want you to talk.
(Typical comments: " Parents think they know the rules, but they don't." "My mom asks annoying questions.'' And ''I hate when my mom tells me to do things even when she doesn't know the first thing about sports.")

Even if you do know what you're talking about, kids don't want you to talk.
("I hate when parents tell us to do the exact opposite of what the coaches say," "If your parent isn't the coach, he or she shouldn't try to be one.")

Kids wish parents would practice what you preach about sportsmanship.
("My dad always wants me to he a 'good sport,' but a lot of the time he blames the loss on the ref." "Arguing with the refs is not only embarrassing, but it takes up time." )

Kids often can't hear a parent yelling when they're concentrating on the game.
(Sometimes, they can. Either way, they don't like it. "Parents yell advice a player doesn't hear because they're so into playing the game." I feel embarrassed when my parents yell so loud that the whole town can hear," and "They yell and scream and look like dorks.")

After they lose, kids don't want to be told it doesn't matter.
(Typical reactions: ""I hate when we get knocked out of the playoffs and parents say, 'You'll get them next time!" "When parents try to cheer you up after a loss, all they do is remind you of the score." )

My daughter Gabby's Travel Soccer team played at Aurora on Sunday afternoon. Despite the loss, Gabs had a strong performance as goalie in the second half. She normally plays defender...this was her first try as a travel goalie. She didn't give up any goals. : )

DAVID COOK AT HOUSE OF BLUES

DAVID COOK played a sold-out show on Thursday night at House of Blues. I was amazed at how early everyone line up to get up by the stage. We hosted a private event in The Foundation Room with David at 3:30. At that point, there were long lines into the front and back of the building! David didn't take to the show until 9:45pm!

My daughter GABBY is a huge AMERICAN IDOL fan. I had her join me for the private event before the show. She was thrilled to meet David!

Overall, the show was O.K. at best. His album is awesome and the singles are HUGE! The sound for the show seemed off. Several people I was with thought the show sounded flat overall. I couldn't help but notice that even his big hits just kinda sat there. We later learned that this was a rookie sound crew. I don't mean to come off as over thinkin' it...but it was quite noticeable. We had several people call into the show this morning and mention the same sentiment.

27 Days...

Today is DAY #27 of my alcohol purge. To jump start my health plan, I pledged to go 27 days without drinking alcohol. I feel great. I have dropped a few pounds and feel energized. I'm feeling so good about going alcohol-free, I plan to extend the purge thru the entire month of September!

Socially and professionally, I end up in so many situations where alcohol is part of the culture. It becomes the norm to show up to a concert or ballgame and head straight to the beer vendor. It becomes a habit to have something...just because it's there. I have to admit, since giving up alcohol over the last 27 days, I feel great! It's been great avoiding the extra calories and having the extra energy each morning....

Phase 2 of the health plan is kicking in. Tightening up the diet and workout plan.

I look forward to the month ahead...
